Adoption Options: Infant Adoption
At Children’s Home Society, we are dedicated to finding just the right family for each child available for adoption. We place healthy infants of all races, as well as those with special needs. Special needs can mean anything from medical challenges to a family history of mental retardation. We offer both Agency Placement and Parental Placement options. In Agency Placement adoptions, a family accepts a child who is in the custody of the agency. The adoptive family and the birth parents may meet on a non-identified basis, or they can exchange identifying information. They may share pictures and letters directly with each other or use the agency as an intermediary.
In Parental Placement adoptions, the child is placed by the birth parents directly with the adoptive family. The agency does not take custody of the child. The amount of contact after the adoption is up to the families involved.
In order to adopt, prospective parents must complete a home study, which is an assessment of your background and motivation to adopt. This is required by Virginia law, and on average takes three months to complete.
The agency social worker who is counseling the birth mother and working with you will complete at least three supervisory visits once the baby joins your family. The agency also makes sure all the legal work is completed.
We encourage you to attend one of our orientation sessions, which are held regularly at each of our three offices. Or, call and speak with one of our social workers who can explain the process in greater detail.
