SAME-SEX ADOPTION IS BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR CHS AND OPENS THE DOOR TO MORE PARENTS

Children’s Home Society of Virginia is committed to our mission to find strong, permanent adoptive families for Virginia’s children. Our work toward this goal is driven by the individual needs of each child and framed by the laws of the Commonwealth.

The recent Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage in Virginia, and the Commonwealth’s action to extend this decision to same-sex adoption, opens the door for more prospective parents to consider adoption. It shifts the current law to make it possible for both parents in a same-sex adoption to have legal parental rights, whereas to date only one parent could claim legal parental rights. In this sense, Children’s Home Society of Virginia’s practices will not change, as we already work with same-sex adoptive parents, as provided by Virginia law, and will continue to honor the laws of the Commonwealth as it expands the legal rights of same-sex adoptive parents.

Children’s Home Society of Virginia welcomes, and will continue to welcome, all individuals, couples, and families who are considering adoption. All applicants will continue to be screened and trained with the ultimate goal to serve the best interests of each individual child, and all adoptions will continue to be guided by the laws of the Commonwealth. We are hopeful the impact of this change will be more interest in adoption, more successful adoptions, and brighter futures for Virginia’s at-risk children. At Children’s Home Society of Virginia, we believe every child deserves a home.
