Adoption is a beautiful journey, but it’s also one that comes with its own unique challenges. For adoptive families, the road doesn’t end once a child is placed. It continues with moments of growth, adjustment, and learning together. Families often face questions and experiences that others may not fully understand, which is why having a strong network of adoptive family support is so valuable.
At Children’s Home Society of Virginia, our mission goes beyond connecting children with loving families. CHSVA is committed to walking alongside families long after the adoption process, providing resources, guidance, and community. Our goal is to ensure that adoptive families never feel alone in navigating the joys and challenges of parenting.
Support and reprieve are key parts of that mission. Families need safe spaces to connect with others who “get it,” opportunities to share their stories, and moments of rest that allow them to recharge. That’s why CHSVA hosts reconnecting events, special gatherings designed to bring adoptive families together, strengthen bonds, and remind parents and children alike that they are part of a larger community that cares.
Most recently, adoptive families enjoyed a night at The Diamond, cheering on the Richmond Squirrels baseball team, as well as a joyful Family Reunion Picnic. Keep reading as we share stories from each of these events and highlight the impact they had on our adoptive families.
Creating Community and Connection: Adoptive Family Support in Action
A Night at The Diamond: Connection Beyond the Ballgame
Our first summer reconnecting event provided an opportunity for families to come together outside of everyday routines and create lasting memories.
In July, adoptive families, CHSVA staff, and youth from My Path Forward braved the summer heat for an evening with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsor, Estes, everyone enjoyed a spread of burgers, BBQ, cold drinks, and sweet desserts before heading to their seats for the game.
But the night was about so much more than baseball! It was about connection. One dad shared that what he values most about CHSVA events is how they surround his children with other adoptive families. In those moments, his kids are reminded that their experiences are shared and that they belong to a supportive community.
For others, the evening was filled with exciting firsts. One guest attended her very first baseball game, and the joy on her face said it all. She quickly joined in the fun, cheering with the crowd, laughing at the Flying Squirrels’ sideshows, and soaking up the ballpark energy.
The night served as a powerful reminder of CHSVA’s mission: to build families, support brighter futures, create spaces where adoptive families can thrive, and where children can experience the joy of belonging. Whether it’s cheering for the home team or sharing a meal together, these simple moments become treasured memories and a reminder that no family walks this journey alone.

Family Reunion Picnic: Celebrating 125 Years of Adoptive Family Support
In August, we wrapped up our 125th anniversary with a festive Family Reunion Picnic! CHSVA families, My Path Forward youth, staff, and board members all came together to share stories, connect, and celebrate our incredible impact over the years.
The picnic was full of laughter, simple joys, and playful moments—kids drew with sidewalk chalk, tossed rings, and played cornhole, while families and staff mingled and enjoyed the beautiful day. It was also a special chance for supporters to meet the amazing families who have opened their hearts and homes to children in need.
During the celebration, our CEO expressed heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of this work and highlighted CHSVA’s legacy, which has touched more than 17,000 families. The 125th anniversary was not only a celebration of our history but also a testament to our enduring commitment to transforming lives and strengthening communities for generations to come.
We’re especially thankful to our generous sponsors, Estes and Troutman Pepper Locke, for helping make this joyful day possible.
“At CHSVA, we create spaces where families can connect, children can experience a true sense of belonging, and parents feel supported along the journey.” – Bruin Richardson, CHSVA Chief Advancement Officer
